I thought I might start a daily feature here on the forum, showcasing one fan each day that is currently on display in the AFCA Museum. I will present several views of each fan......

First up is a fan that is a favorite of a very good friend of mine.....The 12 inch MESCO Fan

Kim, Great idea! Cannot wait to see what the museum has on display as its a bit far away!  Have you thought of taking the pics in a manner where they could be used in the galleries also?

Great idea Kim.   Please include the size of each fan.  This Manhattan is an 8" fan I think.

FANtastic Kim.  Make sure you take photos of all the things requested for the gallery so that these can be included there.

I try to send my fan photos to the gallery so that no one has to rely on the POS search function on the forum.

Thanks Ron.  At first I thought it was a 12" then looked at the small motor which looks so much like my 8" Mesco.

This 360 rotation is achieved by a bearing assembly similar to the W/H Vane oscillator, along with brushes and slip rings to supply power ......

I'll do a bit of everything. Battery fans, water motor fans, hot air fans, spring wound fans, circulators, box fans....whatever is being displayed. I'll try to be as detailed with the CF's as possible, but they are hung so they won't be coming into the shop for their cameo.....

Do you have any idea how many of the "roller coaster" fans are known to exist in collector hands ?
5-10?
20-50?
With absolutely no basis I'm guessing 15.

The fan collector slang term for this fan is Rollercoaster. In recent past Google books has revealed this fan motor manufactured under the name of "STORM WAVE".  The fan was introduced to the market in 1915 under two different names in Chicago. The earliest name is the Allied Electric Company in Feb. 0f 15. There is mention of the Storm Wave fan motor under the manufacturers name The Mutual Electric Co. in Chicago in Oct. of 1915.

The Storm Wave fan evolved under numerous patents. The fan's manufacture moved from Chicago, to Kokomo, IND., and then on to Logansport. The fan like Emerson was financed by a Chicago judge by the name of Willard McEwen. There were two engineers that started the fan's design with a patent in 15. There names were Gustaf Olson and Louis Greenberg.

The fan was marketed as a desk fan, duplex desk fan, table and column models, they were also marketed for railway mentioned as early as 15.

http://www.afcaforum.com/forum1/37027.html

I have followed the Storm Wave fan manufacture starting in 1915-1922. Beyond 1922........?
