Wow, Mike.  You are the definition of a true fan collector.  So that is what Bob Devore looked like. :D  Earl Ballentine played a huge roll in the early Fresh'nd-aire business.  Ballentine was  Russell Electric's fan/circulator related engineer and VP.  Russell Electric's Aerofan and circulators were marketed through Gaylord.  Thanks for sharing a window in time.

I bet Max Weber, Bob Devore, and Earl Ballentine had coffee and donuts together at a little shop in the windy city and ........shot the breeze about making the breeze. :D

Mike Kearns wrote: I have been hunting the Gaylord/Fresh'ND-Aire connection for years, looks like I was looking in the wrong place. A lot of the guys in vending went into sidelines, apparently Gaylord was the only one who noticed on a hot Chicago day people were going into places that had fans, cooling off and leaving, like going into a McDonalds to use the bathroom and not buying anything, as some people do. The principle was similar. A pinball machine would be put next to the pharmacist's counter or next to the bar in a tavern. They were actually designed for grown men to play, not kids, although a lot of kids enjoyed them as well, and if they player wanted to play, they would have the length of the bar or store to peruse something that might not otherwise arouse enough interest for a purchase. Even more so if someone was already playing the game. So customers leasing public attention getters like jukeboxes, candy vending machines or pinball machines could also lease circulators from the same source. Besides being yet another inducement for a public not quite aware they were being manipulated, the mostly non-air conditioned businesses like diners, theaters, lobbies, subway/train stations, restaurants and so on benefitted from literally getting the heavy and cigarette smoke laden stale air out of the place as well as cooling people down.
Mike found a web link recently with a wealth of Chicago based Roto beam/Fresh'nd-aire marketing strategy and advertisements. The link is focused on how the novelty coin op. machine business and how the circulators played a part keeping patronage to the coin operated machines, and the businesses involved. Fresh'nd-aire's Robert Devore strategically used the optional Fan/fragrance cylinder model circulators in my own personal opinion to market his product for the dead season.......WINTER.  In 39 Devore was legally challenged to dismiss his "Air Conditioning" slogan connected to the fragrance model from his advertising.  Devore complied.

Who you kidding, you found the link with all the info. THANKS MIKE! :D

Devore may of been cunning, but all the kings horses, and all the kings men could not prepare Devore for WW11 war material needs.  In 43 Devore sold all rights for Fresh'nd-aire to the larger Cory Corp., and jumped ship. War material needs took the Minneapolis,MN. based Kreig-McClain circulator business ....out of business.
