Hello Friends. Happy 2021! I picked up a BMY and an SMY in an AZ auction recently. ![]() ![]() The SMY just above) is correct and complete but having now broken down the first one, I've noticed some odd things that make me wonder if the base is correct. ![]() Notice how the yoke is slightly bigger (overhangs) than the base. Below is a picture of the motor tag. ![]() The other odd thing I noticed is that the brass sleeves inside the holes that the oil cups screw into are not present and don't appear to belong there like the taller BMY. The pots screw in just fine as they are. The speed coil appears to be correct for this base in that it fits as it should and is held in place by (four) screws at each corner. So here's my question: Is the base correct for this fan? Perhaps the yoke is incorrect (though it fits around the case as it should. Is this a very odd (stumpy) BMY variant? I have replaced the head wires with Tony Clayton wire and I get excellent readings for the three speeds. I don't know if the fan runs (yet) as I had to ship off the brass lever from the speed coil to Darryl Hudson to replace the missing bakelite cover. The rear of the fan did not have the usual brass cap. It had a GE inserted cap. ![]() ![]() I've never seen this before. Last edited on Sat Jan 9th, 2021 06:15 pm by David Kilnapp |

According to Eckerson's survey serials it would be an 08. Not sure just how GE handled the blade hubs in 08? Attached Image (viewed 282 times): Last edited on Sat Jan 9th, 2021 06:32 pm by Russ Huber |

For whatever help it might be, this is serial #363940, I think technically that's second variant of four.....![]() Correction: A bit of confused recollection on my part regarding variants, as pointed out in Darryl's subsequent post... ![]() ![]() ![]() http://www.afcaforum.com/view_topic.php?id=11430 Last edited on Sun Jan 10th, 2021 02:57 am by Steve Rockwell |

This is not a centrifugal start motor. Gentlemen: I thank you kindly for your information. That inserted GE rear cover is an odd one. Never seen that before. I have an extra (Ted Kaczor) brass cap that I can put on this.

I bought three fans in this auction for $408, all inclusive of taxes and auctioneer's premium. Then I paid a very steep $327 to ship the three fans. The shipper (Pakmail) put all three stumps in one box (which concerned me) and shipped them FEDEX. The stumps arrived in three days undamaged. The blades, struts and cages, all went into a second box which weighed 9 pounds. It still hasn't arrived (after being shipped on December 30th). The tracking indicated that somewhere along the way it was incorrectly routed as it went from Arizona to two cities in California, then to Chicago, then to Missouri and last night it was in Ohio. I guess FEDEX wants to this box to tour the USA! My costs for the three fans, with shipping (using the auction winning bids plus 1/3 of the shipping) for each fan were: SMY: $260 (with auction premium and taxes) as compared to the winning bid of $110 including shipping: $109 BMY: $358 (with auction premium and taxes) as compared to the winning bid of $180 including shipping: $109 R&M: $191 (with auction premium and taxes) as compared to the winning bid of $ 60 including shipping: $109 The (expensive) lesson I learned is that if I am going to buy a fan at one of these auctions, then it only makes sense if (a) I can get it for quite a bit under market (b) I can get a kind hearted AFCA member in the area to pick it up and ship it for me. Below is the third fan (the R & M) which is in pretty good shape though the pin stripes are worn off. ![]() ![]() Last edited on Sat Jan 9th, 2021 07:32 pm by David Kilnapp |

Hi Dave,The 1908 BMY had a two rivet blade, and the cage struts were flat and not bent 90 degrees where they mount to the motor, but were straight struts and mounted to the FACE of the motor rather than the OD of the motor like the 09 and later models. The fan in the post above sitting on the shelf is an 08 model. Early 08 models had internal centrifugal start switch..later nodels may not have had internal cent. start switch. Base Should have three holes for rubber feet on the bottom of the base like the pancake fans..1909 and later used (6) rubber feet.

Thanks for the wonderful information Russ. This brings me to one more question (if I may impose on you further). My fan has a hole in the bottom of the case and a slightly larger hole on the back of the case for the headwires. Which is the correct hole? When I got it, the taped up wires were exiting the case through the smaller hole as seen below:![]() Is this correct? Or should the wires exit the case through the slightly larger hole in the bottom of the rear cover? Notice how much larger the hole for the power cord is on the right lower part of the base. That's a HUGE hole. Wonder why they made it so big?

David, Can you please post an image of exactly where your headwire is exiting the motor housing? Thanks.

The above image is the only one I have at this point which shows the head wires exiting the case through a small hole in the bottom of the front half of the case rather than the somewhat larger hole in the rear half of the case as in the right most picture of the two fans above. The fan is completely apart now and I have replaced the headwires at this point. Next step is to strip the old japanne and prime the pieces with automotive primer. I haven’t decided if I want to spend the money to japanne this fan given that I already have $368 into it. Last edited on Sun Jan 10th, 2021 04:27 pm by David Kilnapp |

FWIW...I wouldn't stick anymore money in it other than a rattle can of appliance epoxy. Your fan, your call. In a nut shell, the fan has all the outside features, and motor tag of a correct 08 GE BMY centrifugal start. It will present itself well as this, but, internally it is a later 1910+ BMY. If anyone wants to correct me, please do. My guess is the original centrifugal start mechanism failed and someone gutted the old girl and swapped with a phase shift stator and switch. Being you have two head cord exit holes front and back, that is news to me. I would guess your head cord wires are exiting the stator up front, so using the front housing head cord exit hole probably be your best choice. Good luck!

The hole that the original wires went through is seen below (vs the rear of the case).![]() Perhaps you are correct about someone replacing the original centrifugal start though when I took it apart, it did not appear that the stator had ever been removed and the head wires were original. I can usually spot when head wires have been removed and these were definitely the original. In any case I will use the hole that is seen above as the exit point for the head wires which is, as it was when I received it. Last edited on Sun Jan 10th, 2021 05:59 pm by David Kilnapp |

David, If your front housing holding the stator doesn't appear to be tampered with, or the motor tag doesn't appear to have been removed and transferred to that housing, who in the h ell knows. GE is a mess with their variants and mid season fan motor changes. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can make defined sense of their methods and changes. Even their dated catalogue images can't be trusted. ![]() Your motor tag serial and fan motor features support an 08 squatty base centrifugal start desk fan. But GE fan motors have defied logic more than once before. ![]()
