I obtained a Menominee clamshell with badge a few years back in Illinois. I pulled it out yesterday, disassembled it, and cleaned it inside and out, and put new carbon brushes in to test if it works or not. The fan was functional, but not running a full potential. I was experiencing excessive commutator sparking as well. After pulling the armature back out, I found one of two fine copper wires originally connected to one commutator segment severed. I also noticed that the severed wire leading into the armature winding was carefully wrapped around the remaining connected wire to the commutator segment leading into the armature. Someone in past did the evil deed.  I managed to splice the fine severed wire back together and carefully solder the splices. I then used liquid tape conservatively to insulate the exposed copper as a result of the splice. Being the brittle wound string that covered the solder joints to all the commutator segments was absent, I conservatively coated the circumference of the armature solder joints with liquid tape. I sped up the drying process with a hair dryer. The plug in fan now runs as designed at roughly 2175 RPM at 120 VAC wall current. Being it is an 8" universal brush motor I placed a half wave rectifier diode inline that slowed the fan down to roughly 1650 RPM.         Last edited on Sat Apr 3rd, 2021 03:37 am by Russ Huber |

Good work, Russ! Another antique fan saved. My armature was fine, but I had to rewind the stator coils in mine. Wound a little extra and slowed it a tad, then a diode. The brass blades I made added a little weight to it, but still runs fine.

I wish I would of taken a picture of the fine severed wire before I spliced it. I used a specialty tweezers you could pick out a Gnat's butt with, and a magnifying glass to make the splice. I just got lucky that the frail wire leading into armature winding did not severe making the splice. I was inches away from having to pay White Armature a Ben Franklin + for an armature rewind/rebuild.

The universal motor 8" Menominee clamshell is like a beefed up universal motor 6" polar cub. The clamshell cooks at roughly 2200 RPM on modern AC wall current. Nothing like the mighty mouse 6" Polar Cub with a top end of roughly 3700 RPM.
