Fellow collectors: I recently finished the restoration of a Century 16 inch oscillating S3. It runs perfectly. Unfortunately the speed coil shows no discernible difference between speeds which I have been told is a common feature of the five speed coils. Therefore I am seeking a replacement for this coil - for a coil that actually works at five distinctly separate speeds. Please PM me if you have a coil that might be willing to sell. I would be mighty appreciative. Also, I would like to acquire a Century S3 Skeletal (unrestored) oscillator or non-oscillator if you are interested to sell. I can do a Swap if you prefer as I have a couple of great restored fans including a Westinghouse tank with perfect Japanning from Rick Powell or a GE 16 inch AO with brass blade completely restored. I can provide detailed pictures if you want to chat about a possible trade. Last edited on Mon Aug 12th, 2019 03:46 pm by David Kilnapp |

You will probably have to have the existing speed coil rewound to achieve 5 distinct speeds.

I figured that would be the case and I actually emailed one of the guys who does it who said it would be very difficult. I figure I’ll just buy another Variac (my third one) and get the speeds that way. Probably cheaper than a rewind at any rate

Way cheaper. Get the model M5, they are real low profile and handle 6 amps. You can mount it in a wall like a dimmer switch. I plan to mount several of them in my house to control wall-mount pancakes with missing switches.

There are a couple tripple M5s on ebay(common setup for that model) for under $100. That's $33.33 apiece.

Three M5 Variacs on a single shaft, I assume to be wire up for three phase. You just use them separtely(spelling?). Looks like those I saw for less than a Bill have been sold, but they come up frequently, I have several. This is $135 shipped or make offer, still a good deal. Not mine, If I didn't have a couple dozen Variacs I'd buy it.[url=https://www.ebay.com/itm/GENERAL-RADIO-M5-VARIAC-AUTOTRANSFORMER-STACK-OF-THREE-G7/192865628019?hash=item2ce7afef73:g![]() ![]()
