To All...

New BST forum rules are now posted and slightly changed from what we have already been doing... Read them and follow the clarification for the BST...
Any questions you might have please pm me and I will try to answer them... I think these rules make more sense as we tried to address the member and non members benefits...

I was hoping links to Ebay etc would be not be allowed. Post the price or not, no exceptions. My Facebook news feed ane AFCA BST is now cluttered with ads for fans. No prices, just links, for me this is a hassle, limited bandwidth and downloads/ uploads.

We felt like it is a benefit to members to have this option... I have posted price and picture no link... And I have posted a link to an ebay link...

New BST Posting Rules:

This forum is limited to the discussion of fans and items related to fans.
  1. Fans or Fan Parts listed for sale in the Buy, Sell, Trade (BST) forum must have a price listed and photo(s) attached. No “make offer” posts are allowed.
  2. Links to a fan or fan parts on a privately owned/personal website must have a price and a photo of the item on the forum post in addition to the link.
  3. Auction/eBay links are not subject to the above rules as they are auctions and price has yet to be determined. These links are allowed as a service to the AFCA members to help them be aware of an otherwise unknown purchase opportunity.
  4. Guests (non-AFCA members) are welcome to post fans or fan parts for sale with a fixed price only. Using the Buy, Sell, Trade forum to promote eBay, Facebook, Craigslist or Personal Websites by Guests is prohibited.
  5. The AFCA is not responsible for policing transactions regarding items posted on our BST Forum. The agreement(s)/transaction(s) are between the seller and the buyer.
NOTE: Posts which violate the above rules will be deleted without warning.

OFF-TOPIC POSTINGS WILL BE DELETED.
OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE, "FLAME" POSTS, ETC. WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
"Flaming" is an Internet term for derogatory, demeaning, angry, insulting, etc, posts.  As a general rule, those sorts of posts start an exchange between aggrieved parties which is termed a "flame war." In short, the rule is, keep it civil, preferably friendly.

Guests using our forum (meaning non-AFCA members) are forbidden from using our Buy, Sell, Trade forum for promoting their eBay, Facebook or Craigslist links.  Such posts will be deleted.

Disclaimer: The opinions expressed on our forum are the views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the Antique Fan Collectors Association.

If an auction link is listed, should the minimum/start bid be listed here? (not a reserve bid, I have never understood that concept)

Me either Steve,

In fact, out of principal, I'll pretty much ignore any eBay listing where the seller knows their bottom line, but won't tell you what it is.

I guess we could print a book devoted to "exceptions to Rules" Couple hundred pages long, certified by lawyers, copyrighted, and spend several thousand getting copies made... Then when it is determined an evildoer has run afowl of the rules we will in the middle of the night raid their home with members of SWAT and CNN should be there recording the take down! Now that is the AFCA I want to belong to!  😊😊

Now you're talking. As long as we're on this kick, I think we should also demand to know what the seller paid, what their costs were in obtaining it, when they obtained it, the name of the previous owner, the original invoice price of the item in both original dollars (or other currency) and inflation adjusted price, the name of their god parents, and a warrenty.

My point is. no exceptions. State the asking price. Period.Very simple. Or go to FACEBOOK or other on-line sources and list auction links. But not here. Otherwise, drop the asking price rule altogether and make this another auction site. "0" exceptions. And maybe that is what it should be if ya'll want it that way. Ebay should not get a pass in my opinion. Peace out.

I have to agree with Steven here. On the other forums where I’m a member, no links to eBay auctions are allowed in the Classifieds, no exceptions. Either state a price or trade value, or don’t post it. But that’s just MHO.

I like to be able to post my items for sale on eBay with a link to the auction.  Of course there is no set price unless the ebay auction is a buy it now.   I agree that posting a link to eBay or other sales outlets should be for paying club members only.

I am in agreement with the notion that any other website that advertises items for sale should not be posted on the BST AFCA site.  How many members routinely scour EBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, and a host of internet for sale sites for fans? I personally believe and hope that fans for sale on our members site are tailored for the membership in rarity and price, in many instances if there’s no interest from the membership it’s stated it will be going to Ebay if not sold within the membership, I feel it makes it more of a perk and exclusive by limiting it, I don’t want to view duplicate listings. I would also hope that the membership listings would be somewhat discounted to take into the account the 10 percent Ebay fee and 3 percent PayPal fees aren’t paid.

This should also pertain to the comments that turn a BST post into a general conversation by others which commonly evolves when pics and statements are made by non-sellers.

Who? Determines what a fair price is on here? We dont have a kabal on here determining prices on anything... We R allowing members a link to Ebay or other sites to get the most they can from their fan! U R under the impression a member as a benefit to them should not be allowed to post a link to their ebay sale? Rare fans will always bring a premium whether here or any other site... Average run fans many times will not bring much here but on ebay the fan will many times enjoy a little more $$ for their hobby... Is any one saying we should set up pricing for fans on here? That would a night mare... The steps we have posted do not require lawyers to understand... It is simple and straight forward... Links to a members sale is a benefit to our members and only should be looked at that way... If you think a price is too high, PM the member and ask if they can do any better! Hey!! Looky there I found a loop hole for us all to use!!  BE POLITE! For crying out loud it is just a fan and not any thing to lose a friendship over. .

Excellent point.  And in our situation we have no idea what a fair price is for pretty much all of my dad's fans unless we find a recent sale on Ebay for the same fan in similar condition.  So we are relying on Ebay auctions, which was not our first choice.

We have sold other non-fan parts of my dad's antique collections using professional auctioneers and had good to very good results.  But for the fan's the professional auctioneers we contacted were either not interested, or were only interested in auctioning the very best fans in my dad's collection, which was not acceptable to us for many reasons.  So we are stuck with Ebay, and it has definitely not been an enjoyable experience.  But we are doing the best we can.

And sellers here pull out the asking/sold price after the item was sold. But I can see a compromise where members only can post links to auctions. Should be another perk for us paying "green" members.

I agree 100%. Some of my nicest fans were eBay buys I found on here. I definitely see it as a service. If you don’t like eBay links, don’t click on it! It’s very simple! No one is forcing you to view an add but that doesn’t mean you should take that choice from the rest of us. The rules seem more than fair. Besides, seeing as the link is in the post and the price is in the link, you technically can’t call it an exception. The price is there.
