Fan Has Been Sold![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pictured is an unrestored GE fan. It is in running condition. I believe it is a two speed fan. The only damage on the fan is at the brass nut at the back top right. See the photograph of this section. It will be double boxed with the motor in one box with a hose clamp on the shaft. Cage and blades in another box and then combined with the motor in a larger box measuring 23"x19"x17" weighing 32 pounds. Price is $750.00 Attached Image (viewed 824 times): Last edited on Tue Jan 19th, 2021 12:27 pm by William Kocher |

Is that cage from a later fan? Thought it would be the open ring sans GE badge

OK, I know parts were carried over & repairs made over the years - - I kind of like the open ring version -I had 2 1900 models & they had both versions, This is Kim Frank level stuff!

Steven P Dempsey wrote: Is that cage from a later fan? Thought it would be the open ring sans GE badgeEARLY 1899 GEs have the small open ring cage badge but, shortly after the early ones, GE added the GE monogram to the cage. The cage is identical except for the addition of the GE cap. But, very early cages had a machined center ring, not the pressed one seen on most early guards. 1900 guards were the same, with GE cap, but the rear ring was considerably heavier gauge than used on 1899 models.

Not necessarily! It won’t be my fan so the decision will rest with the one I give it to. Stay tuned

In the antique car world original has become so much more desirable and interesting. Collectors of Mission furniture almost always feel the refinishing of a good original piece will devalue the piece. Take an antique gun and refinish it; instant devaluation of desire. Wait a decade or less and I bet the unrestored good fans will be the ones in most demand. By they maybe many fans will have been partially or fully reproduced to having an original unrestored one will be better. I have never painted a fan, polished the brass on more than one two when it was needed. But I also search out very nice original complete examples such as William's pancake.

Patina adds character to a fan rather than the shine. I am not saying its ruining the fan but it's a shame to see patina that over 100 years old get polished away. Makes the fan one of a kind since it took 100 years to get that patina. Last edited on Wed Jan 20th, 2021 02:56 am by Zachary Parr |

I too find it strange that fan collecting still favors restored over clean originals. Original fans are unique: they age differently according to the conditions they were stored in. In sharp contrast, many restored fans (although well done) blend in in a sea of shiny brass. They lose their character that can't be replicated. Fans with lots of rust, bends, incorrect parts, and poor repaints should be properly restored in my opinion. Some of us prefer the look of age and history while others prefer all to be shiny, new looking, and devoid of history, patina, or character. In time I concur that collectors will value good original paint and patina acquired over a century.

Let's give them a chance to read about those who do prefer unrestored fans and let them know that restoring a fan is not necessarily the best action.

I definitely think patina on a nice original fan looks classy. That said the key word is NICE original. It really irks me when people are criticized for restoring a fan that looks like it was on the bottom of a lake for 100 years. In my opinion, there comes a point when it’s not patina, it’s damage. That said, I do enjoy nice original fans AND restored fans and own both. Neither is right or wrong and I just think it should be left up to personal preference and the state of the individual fans.
