 I bought this fan at an auction, it wouldn't turn on and when I was examining the cord, it came right off.  Is there a trick on how to get it pulled back through the housing?  or do I need to do something to the black collar?  Thanks!!

 you weree lucky not to have sparks!. the black collar has to be compressed with a pair of pliers and pulled out of the fan, , which can require some wiggling as it snaps in. the cord has to be replaced and then the collar re attached by comression and put back in the hole. if you are handy you can do it or have a handy friend do it for you or help you

 That's a type of crimping grommet used to hold the cord in place. Bonnie, where in New York are you located? Maybe one of us can give a bit of assistance?

 Hi Rob,  Thanks!  I found the little clip that opens it, got the cord repaired.  Fan turns on fine, runs on low and high, but starts smoking after a few minutes!!  I ordered some sewing machine oil. I'll try that when it gets here in a few days!!

 If its smoking after a couple of minutes of running then it sounds like you might have a bad motor.
