Hello everyone, I am brand new to the forum as well as this is my first fan restoration. When it comes to understanding the low level details of speed resistors, it is just over my head. I have searched the forum and have found a couple of "questionable" solutions, but this is only because it is outside of my understanding. I am hoping someone can give me advice on how to replace the bad resistor with a modern solution to make the fan reliable and safe. 3 speed, only low works. Medium and High don't do anything. I replaced the switch with a cheap one to verify it isn't the switch, I got the same results. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

I don't think it could be your speed resistor causing your problem, because if your fan is only working on "low" and not on medium or high then it might be your motor that's messed up because the speed resistor works by "choking down" the amount of power the motor gets to get medium and low speed whereas High is the motor being powered directly off the wall outlet, are you sure its not medium and low that aren't working and high is the only speed working?

I don't know about your fan, but sometimes the speeds are reversed, for example instead of off, low, medium, high; it would be off, high, medium, low. Maybe someone who owns one of these can tell us which of these it has.

I’m inclined to agree that the fan is running on High speed and medium and low are not working because of the speed resistor is bad. Can you fine any ohm value markings on the speed resistor? Or, can you take an ohmeter to measure it? Best remove on lead to get an accurate reading. If you can’t get a reading.... You found your problem. I have a junk power resistor in good condition that is from a Westy 12la4 and it is 35 ohms. Good luck. Malcolm
