Without a growler, you can do a simple test by placing ohmmeter leads on segments. A good one will increase in the ohms reading as you progress from the first two segments that are side by side to the the others, continuing all the way until you reach the first segment.
Hope this is clear.
The field windings will also need testing and should have some rather low ohms reading. Use the lowest ohms setting on your meter.
