Ya. It appears to have done ages ago. If his 2 sets of windings in the stator are still intact, that would be a good thing. The only reason I can come up with for the funky switch giving option for AC or DC is the DC winding in the stator would have higher ohms. The fan would otherwise run faster on same voltage DC current.

That's probably correct. My R&M 1176 brush motor AC screams at 70V DC. All said however, gives me a future idea on how to tame it and just run it DC...
