I think it originally had a speed coil and two-speed switch in the base. So...the cord would have gone into the base. For some reason, the coil & switch were removed and wire run directly to the motor. I don't think those speed coils were famous for going bad, so who knows? More likely the switch got broken. Probably the results of an old "DIY Genius". ~Sparky~
