|Hello,I've lurked around here a few times, but decided to join so I could participate. I have an appreciation for vintage and antique items, but never got the fan bug. I've always admired the older fans with their steel construction and superiority, though. As of today, I own about a half dozen fans, mostly modern. The best fan I have is a Patton High Velocity floor fan. It's maybe 18"-20", and it really blows.
I have used fans for many years in my workshop to ventilate fumes. The fan of choice has always been a Lasko 20" box fan in the window blowing out as an exhaust closest to the fumes. This served me well, as depending on the weather, I had either an air conditioner or heater running and didn't want to pull too much air out. I have just moved to where the weather is nicer, so no AC here yet, but the shop has been getting very hot and now I want to move much more air to cool the shop. The cheap Lasko doesn't move nearly enough air. My Patton is a beast, it works really well, but to put it in the window, I need to put it on a box that takes up part of my workbench. What I would like to find is a 20" box fan that will go in the window, but actually be strong enough to pull a decent amount of CFM in from the other open window and cool the shop down. The fumes are from adhesive, but it's a very small amount being applied by a paintbrush. Nothing potentially combustible is atomized, so I don't need anything explosion proof, just a good strong fan. I came across the Lasko B20725, the modern, all metal fan that came out in the past few years, but it appears to be discontinued, and the reviews seem questionable anyway. I have also been using the Patton in the house as a whole house fan to cut back on AC usage. But again, since it's a floor fan, I have needed to put it up on something in front of a window. This happens to be an ironing board, right in front of the washing machine. My wife is getting irritated from having to move it all the time, so if I can find this good box fan to put in the windows, I will want to be able to find 2 or 3 to use both at work and at home.
I really don't know where to start. Obviously I want something powerful, as quiet as is practical without sacrificing CFM, and something reasonably common so I can find more than one. I am mechanically inclined, I know how to tear apart a motor, so I'm not scared to look for fixer uppers. But I am not after something collectible. If I could buy something off the shelf brand new, I would prefer that. I just haven't found anything that even comes close to good enough of a box fan available anywhere. Any advice on what to look for would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to a new addiction!
