I want to re-pourpose these and mount Variacs inside. Need to be 4-1/2" + inside.

I've marveled at this item in my neck of the woods for a couple months now, just because it's cool.  Looks like it might comply with your depth requirements:

The wooden box with lid and decorative latch came from Hobby Lobby. They have them in different sizes.  I think it cost me a whole $6.00 back then.  The square sheet brass on top I purchased at and had cut at a trophy shop to size and I artificially oxidized it for the antique patina look. That cost me $10.00.  I had to live on bread and water for the rest of the week. :tumbs Good luck.

Thanks for the close up pics Russ. I saw yours before and it inspired me. I did build one from a Hobby Lobby box, but the store in my area didn't have a very good selection. The only box I found that would fit, I have to take the knob off to open the lid.

Any time, Richard.  After months of being out here I bet we could make him kneel to $20   :D

Probably more than you want to pay, but some of them are pretty cheap and come in a variety of sizes.

Thanks Michael, I got a file card box from Amazon a while back for ten bucks shipped, was perfect for a 2.25 amp Variac. I have some larger Variacs, and I like the details I have seen on the old instruments, hence my search.
