Is there any reliable source for researching pre-1950 fans?

Go on eBay to refine search, look under sold and completed listings.  It will usually give a very high value to your fan, but not always realistic.

I agree, ebay is the best place to learn current prices.   Usually throw out the very high and very low prices and compare prices SOLD for with the actual condition of the fan.   Fanfair and regional meets are also a good place to learn pricing vs condition vs model.  Other members will often help with pricing if you contact them directly.

Ebay “SOLD” search will provide a short history (a few months) of fan sales and may not give you a comprehensive enough pool to establish value for the fan(s) that you are researching.

“Worthpoint” is a subscription service that provides a long auction history (10 years plus) from many different sources.

Additionally,  nothing would prevent you from getting opinions from the membership on this “open” forum.  It might  be more reliable to have several opinions.   What do you have?
