I am servicing a 1949 GE 16" Vortalex Fan and want to know what kind of grease I should use in the oscillator gear box and how full I should pack the gear box. Also, would the grease that is recommended for this fan be good to use in a Emerson oscillator gear box as well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
There’s quite a lot of opinion on this. Red n tacky is good. Others just suggest a good multipurpose. Still others do a white lithium. I’ve been in that last camp but am not thrilled with it as it’s separating out. Anyway, here’s a link to a good discussion on it to include suggestions on how much to use. Hint: Don’t fill the oscillator box to the brim!
I thought about using mobil 1 full synthetic, but the way the gearbox is made it relies on some of the grease melting to lube one of the gear shafts through a small hole. I don't think Mobil 1 melts as readily as general purpose grease. Anyone have any thoughts on this.
Valvolene bearing grease. You can pick it up at any auto parts store. The Lucas is synthetic, and the Valvolene organic, I use either of them depending on my mood. Lol. The valvolene is probably more likely to provide oil into that bearing. Frankly, if you run that fan a lot, on occasion, I'd open up the oscillator lid and give the rear bearing a few drops of real oil. You don't need to remove the rotor, just tip the fan forward and let the oil run into the bearing.
