I am in the process of redoing an Emerson 77648 AL & this one has some strange things I don't remember seeing before. The whole fan had been spray painted black sometime in its life. The base is cast iron & is a very rough casting. I thought before I stripped it, it was rust under the paint. No pits from rust, just very rough casting. After painting it almost resembles crinkle paint. The motor stem is too long, so uses two thrust washers, one steel & 1/4" thick. Upon tearing down the motor, I discovered the entire motor housing is cast aluminum. I don't recall seeing an aluminum motor housing on this series before. I finally got around to working on the motor tag today (which even looks different). After removing the spray paint, I fount the date code, 26. 1946? I did not think they made any fans in 1946. Does this explain the aluminum motor & rough cast iron base? Was this built with what was available. Has anyone else run into one of these?

I have had a few 77648s and never have seen a aluminum motor housing.  The base in aluminum seems common.  You might have a rare fan there!

Never seen one with an aluminum motor housing. The oddest 77648-AL I've seen is owned by Andrew Block - it appears to be factory Ivory finish.

I have never even seen an aluminum base. Do you have any pictures you can post? I would like to see what it looks like. I have an early version of this fan with the S-wire type cage and I am aware of a couple variances but none of those you mentioned

I have one with an aluminum motor housing. I posted it a couple years back asking the same question and got no replies. It must be a bit rare. It also has a cast iron base.

Cheers,
Bill

From page 6 of same catalog for 1946---
"Finish:   Lustrous baked black enamel on motor and base, blades in satin black Lacquer and guard in Udylite finish with blue nameplate."

Putting this fan back together tonight & noticed the three wall mounting holes are not even round, they were never drilled. Looks like they were in a rush to get these out in '46 & therefore never machined the cast iron base. If I have room, I may bring it to Pig Pickin.
