I decided to rebuild this 10" Westy, which was my grandfather's...it cooled my brother & me off after we'd get sunburned every year on our vacation to Florida. Despite decades of use, it was in incredible shape, with no play whatsoever in the armature bushings, and the oscillating mechanism worked perfectly. Although it worked, smoke drifted out of the motor...the enamel was coming off the 100 year old wire. I rebuilt the stator, using insulating paper, and wrapping each of the 4 poles with fresh 28g enameled magnet wire, 300 wraps each, using a wiring guide someone on the forum sent me. Brushing clear 2-part epoxy on the windings would keep them in place and allow the bright red & green wire to show. The base and cage were cleaned & painted, and the motor was polished & clear-coated. It was a little scary turning it on the first time, but the blades took off like a rocket...it spins fast & smooth. I'm glad to have it working and looking great...it has tremendous sentimental value to me...Thanks to the forum member who sent the wiring diagram...it was 3 years ago and I don't remember who. After success with this little Westy, I'm on the lookout for another fan... Attached Image (viewed 119 times):
