The speed coil itself should be able to transfer to another ceramic switch base as the speed coil is just fine, its the switch base itself that will need to be replaced.
There have been some members on here that have repaired the old broken switch base successfully using pool epoxy, get a hold of Russ Huber for the information about repairing broken switches with pool epoxy as he was the one who did that successfully and posted the results.
As for the fan's rotor binding up when we were monkeying around with it yesterday morning, I'm pretty sure the fiber spacer washers are more than likely disintigrated and that's what's causing the rotor to bind up, like I said earlier those fiber washers can be bought from Ace Hardware for less than 50 cents a piece.
Just measure the rotor shaft diameter and whatever the rotor shaft's diameter is, you'll want to find fiber washers with an inner diameter of that same size or slightly larger, and you'll probably need 4 of them, 2 in the front and 2 in the back, that's usually the formula for proper rotor spacing in these old fans but there are some exceptions, generally you'll want enough spacers in the fan to have 1/8" to 1/16" of front/back play in the rotor.
