Hello everyone, I am trying to rehab and rewire my first antique fan, an Emerson 79648-AP, and have found myself in a bit over my head. I wanted to open it up to fix a persistent rattle that is worst on low (I suspect it may need shimming or some new end float shims but that’s a problem for another day...) but when I went to move it, the head wire started sparking so now I’m doing a rewire.

The wiring inside is very bare and patched many times. Due to my own inexperience, I wasn’t able to trace the 3 head wires to their connection points in the base and now I’m at a loss as to how to rewire. What method can I use to determine which head wire connects where in the base?

I would suggest trying to find a local member to help. Without the proper meters and tools, it would be difficult to talk you through the process. Post your location and see if someone speaks up.

If you’re near south eastern PA, I’d be glad to assist.

Hey Chrissy,  Ed is so right.  You need some serious help.  Any chance you are located near Harrison, Arkansas?  There is a fan meet there next weekend and you could get some serious help there. Don't have to be a member.

Hey All! Thank you for the offers of help, I live in central Virginia and may need some help if I can’t figure it out.
I do have a multimeter and all the tools to crimp and heat shrink the wires. I found a post on this forum that said the wiring diagram for the 79648-AP-G is the same as the 77646-AS, does anyone know if that is not the case for the AP (no G) as well?

I measured the resistance between each of the wires and got:
1-2: 293
1-3: 70
2-3: 230

My plan is to follow the 77646-AS diagram and reattach the wires accordingly, crimp connect and 2 layers of heat shrink.
