hi, i got the fan at a thrift store for 5$, it has a cool variable control kind of like a dimmer and a rotating grille. has anybody have any experience with these or know when it was made? i have never heard of mistral, i am assuming there is a company behind them?
hi maryann i've seen quite a few of those, not just by mistral but by others too and they show up on ebay every so often. they were popular into the early 90's if you look on the fan it'll say warning do not use in window... and i aslo believe i have heard reports of some catching fire but don't quote me :)
I'm not an expert on them but I did find this. It's possible that the US made / sold fans were unaffected. While the slide switch could overheat, it seems the bigger problem was that the plastic cases themselves were flammable.
One of our members is doing a video series on his. The fan is manufactured of a non-fire-retardant material. The variable speed switch, apparently, could suffer a component failure and ignite the plastic housing. I don't have any info on which models or voltage ratings were affected by the recall; however this type of hazard could be mitigated by correctly done modifications to the fan. I believe that's what Harley's plans are:
