Most Emerson fans were made with a black Japan finish, but a few were made in a color called French Grey. For some reason this paint wasn’t very durable so a French Grey finish in good condition is fairly scarce. I believe those were made in the late 20s or early 30s.

I have a 2010 and 1520 Emerson. Would those still be Japan finish?

Yes, they are japan finish, if they are original. The french grey is from 1940.

They also painted some in Ivory. They would paint fans to order if you bought enough.

I believe some "military issue" Emerson were painted the Ivory color.

This is the reason I'm asking.... Link to a WHITE Emerson I can't tell if this is original color or not. What's the consensus?

Looking at the badge I would tend to say it’s original. I know the 71666 was one of the more prominent models produced in French Grey. The black motor tag is a bit puzzling though.

Actually, never mind, the tag seems original too. Here’s some reading that might be helpful. https://www.afcaforum.com/forum1/54232-2.html

Emerson made a lot of colors. Here is a page from the 1930 catalogue with 14 different colors plus black. Some earlier catalogues also list color options. ![]() ![]()

In reading up on Japanning it's pretty clear that it contains lead. What is also interesting is that you could get the additive in a bright red color. Adding that to Japan is likely how they made the brick red Japan. Just a guess, but perhaps someone will come along and verify that. Other than that, Japan is asphaltum based and that is coal black. The colors that follow are from all appearances oven baked enamels which are not nearly as durable. I had a brick red Emerson 12646. I would swear it was original and I sold it to someone who really wanted it because of its color. The color is identical to the color shown on the fan below. I sold it to Chuck Brandt or Doug Wendle, I can't remember. Steve Stephens wrote: Could this be an original brick red Emerson 12646?
