my friend has a 1902 pancake that he is trying to put on a Coleman deflector... it has lots of power once it's going but on start up is very weak ...is there anything he can do to help this.  can a capacitor be added?

Loosen up the belt drive. They don't have a lot of torque on start up and just the little bit of resistance the belt puts on the rotor shaft can impede it.. Or he can rewind the motor with about 10-15% fewer wraps per field coil.

You can also change the gear ratio to slow the oscillation down. My 8 vane mounted on my pancake starts on high, but not on any other speed. The oscillation speed is very sedate, though. With a higher gearing, i'm sure it wouldn't start without a push.
You can also adjust the mesh of the gears to lower resistance.
Cheers,
Bill
