I have seen a number of 16” Emerson 77648 with a variety of letters — AS, SO, AQ, AN, etc.  What do these 2 letters mean in relation to identifying the fan?

Chad for the most part, the suffixes are color & finish codes. The base fan is a 77646, but unlike the early days where most fans were black unless special ordered, the more modern fans were offered in a host of colors & finishes. One notable exception is the APG which was a totally different fan built to military specs.
