I'm a newbie working on a 77646 AD that belonged to my grandfather (1938).  Thanks in large part to this forum, I've taken it apart, cleaned and reassembled it.  The head wire (which I've replaced) was oil soaked and broken near the stator.  I think I found some specks of color in the oiled wire which enabled me to wire the new headwire correctly.

When I turn the fan on, I need to spin the blades to get it going.  It then runs smoothly in all three speeds. I'm guessing the startup, problem is a capacitor and have ordered a new one to replace the"sardine can".  I have two questions:

When installing the new, 2 wire capacitor, how do I determine which wire attaches to which head wires?

I also discovered that if I spin the blades backwards with the fan on, it will run backwards.  Does this mean I have the headwires improperly wired?  If so How do I correct it.

Thanks for any help.

Tom,

Thanks for the reply. So it won't matter which of the capacitor wires I run the single head wire to and which gets the other head wire as well as the wire from the speed switch?

The capacitor should be non polarized.  Connect it as shown in the diagram.  Follow the multimeter readings (A-B, A-C, B-C) to determine the proper hook up.
