This is the newest Museum project. While it isn't necessarily "fan' related, it is a big part of Fanimation history. This is a dumbwaiter that was completely designed and fabricated by Tom Frampton back in 1980, while still working at Casablanca. It was built for a long gone restaurant here in Indianapolis, the Loft, and Tom flew out here to assemble it on site. The restaurant, which featured the 'revolutionary' Jenn-Air grill, was at 52nd and Shadeland Ave. It wasn't around more than a few years and after going out of business, all the fixtures went to auction. The dumbwaiter was bought by a local cardiologist for his party barn. After he passed away years later, the dumbwaiter was purchased by an antique store and advertised as an 1890's era fixture. It gets a bit fuzzy here, but Tom's son Nathan was contacted by the cardiologist's son, after having found the restaurants original paperwork among his fathers belongings. He let Nathan know about the dumbwaiter being featured at an auction house around Atlanta ,Ga. Tom realized it was the one he built and brought it back to the Indianapolis area. It has languished over in a corner of the warehouse for many years. I'm just now getting around to preparing it for display. We set it up originally to get measurements so that it would open up into the upstairs museum, but decided it would be better just to make it an operational piece and show it off. It will set against the wall just to the left of where I have it set up now. The museum is expanding just a bit, out into the area of the warehouse as you come into the shop. I'm not sure if it will be completely ready by the September meet, but it'll be close. We're also changing out the motor that powers it with a 1/4 horsepower Crocker-Wheeler unit. Bill Fanum has offered to go thru the motor to make sure it can be used for power when he comes to the meet.... Well, here is my life for the next couple of months...![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited on Tue Jul 14th, 2020 02:25 pm by Kim Frank |

15 years is an eternity in the restaurant business! Cook your own food? It sounds like the same concept as the "Melting Pot" restaurants except they were fondue. I went there once. $75 per person to cook my own stuff in a pot of boiling cheese. The chocolate dip for desert wasn't bad.

Fitting the top on a junk piece of plywood. As expensive as oak veneered plywood is today, I'd rather make mistakes on an expendable piece..... Attached Image (viewed 507 times):

Next comes the wiring of the electronics, transformer, and switches. Once that's done, we'll fit the motor, assemble everything, and make sure it works. After that, it'll get disassembled, the cabinet skin will be fabricated and then the finishing work begins on everything. Hopefully it'll be ready by the Museum Meet in September..... We have made some progress on the Dumbwaiter project. The cabinet top and side panels have been fabricated and eventually will be put in a medium dark walnut finish... Attached Image (viewed 229 times):
