The Dremel for me is indispensable. I buy the wire brushes in bulk. But they will only work for about 3 min then start throwing out wires all over the place. Is there a maker that actually makes wire brushes that hold together?

Most dremels, or die grinders, are very high speed, but they have speed control. The trick to using a wire wheel in a die grinder is to not over speed them.

I may need to get a new dremel. Mine has only two speeds.

If you have a Variac, they work great for slowing down Dremel Moto tools.

I've found that the small Dremel tools are too small for wire brushing fan cages, etc.
I use a cheap 1/4" electric die grinder with a Variac to slow it down with wire brushes.
This works well for me to clean rusty steel cages like Fresh'nd Aire Fans, etc.
DO NOT USE ON FULL SPEED!   WEAR EYE PROTECTION!

I've fought the same battle. It seems that the brushes don't last at all. One thing which is easy to do is to apply too much pressure to the brush, thereby flexing the bristles too far and causing metal fatigue. Let the speed of the tool do the work, with very light pressure.
