I have this Emerson fan that has a terrible vibration.  After adjusting blades, it still would not settle down so i disassembled it to find out that the shaft that the armature rides on seems to be worn down on the top front end towards the blades so I assume this is the problem.  Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so, what can be done to fix it?

Did you check the shaft with a micrometer? or at least, a dial caliper? Is there a visible ridge on the shaft? It is not unusual for the top of the shaft to be more polished than the rest, but unless the fan was run forever with no oil, it may not be the problem. If you can feel a ridge on the shaft, it is worn. The shaft is steel and the rotor is cast iron. Normally, the iron will wear before the shaft. Can you detect any radial slack in the rotor/shaft fit? Pictures may help.

Hey Mark.  I can feel a ridge on the top of the shaft.  I just pulled the shaft out and turned it 180 degrees to see if that would help but unfortunately it didn't seem to help much.

There are enough of those Emersons out there that you may find a junker with a good shaft. I still maintain that if you don't feel any radial slack in the rotor, then it is a blade balance problem. Even with some wear, they can run smooth.
