Hi Louis, What is the material and how much is the cost? Version B no hole. Probably 2 top 2 bottom and  1 pointer .

It is a sample casting.  Lost wax done in brass/bronze?  Have not tested yet.  Busy with work.

I'm sure I could use a few myself.

I hear you.  Let me try selling the pointers first.  The sample looks good.  I need to remove the gears from a broken one and install to make sure it is working.  The casting is very detail.  Take a look underneath the lid...no runs.  Casting thin parts I was told is a pain.

I need an approximate count of how much interest there are in the Kidney gear box with cover. I will be heading down this Saturday to place an order. The gears sat in there nicely. Thank you.

Lou,
I am definitely interested in a full top, bottom and pointer. I luckily have the gears, just need the castings. Feel free to PM once you have the price.

Thanks.

I'll need some too.

There are two varieties with different size holes!

Maybe make the smaller one and we can drill them if needed?

Shaft snug...not too loose...not too tight. I did confirm that it does engage and rotate. There is clearance for the ball bearing as well.

Indeed there is two styles. The one with the two open holes will be/should be ready by end of month.

Enjoy.

Andrew, which of the two gear box do you need?  There are two variations.

I have 2 or three kidneys missing everything... How do I determine which box and gears do I need?

If anyone is unsure which box they need...post a picture of the underside of the gear box. If you don't have the gear box...post of a picture of the gear shaft and switch shaft.  I will let you know which one you need.

Version A.  Again...the switch shaft size is NOT interchangeable.

Louis,
I need version B.

Mine is the single hole.

Approx Shaft Diameter - Large Gear/Through Hole - 0.31" / 7.9 mm
Approx Shaft Diameter - Gear Assembly - 0.24" / 6.18 mm

Thanks for all your effort with these castings.

Currently working on version B.  Will get it casted at end of month.

How much are the parts?  I may have interest in a couple sets. Can confirm which type when I know the pricing.

So far...I only have one sample of version A. I will be picking up more of version A end of month. Version B...currently making a mold...plan on casting at end of month.

Price will be reasonable...I have been talking to folks here on this forum. I'm not fleebay.  This is not my main means of living...like doing this for fun and helping out a little...notice during my readings...many people were frustrated with missing/damage Kidneys.

I was also blessed with a missing Kidney/damage despite buying one which seem to have an intact Kidney. After cleaning it up...oh crap. So...I figured why not do this since I'll bet most people also have this problem. The pointers...selling dirt cheap...did not take much work to mold these.

This endeavor was done due to an original problem I had. I bought a fan from overseas with an interesting oscillator. William Dunlap help come up with the naming..."Brass Ball". I purposefully left that fan discussion...because I had plans...a surprise. But this is the fan that started this whole molding project:

This fan will be cast in both steel and brass "Brass Ball" oscillator and "Steel Ball" oscillator.  I personally like them brass ball but will settle for balls of any type.

As for price difference...they will both the same...it just takes time for me to make the wax mold and fix blemishes.  Pricing will be around 300-350 once I figure how much shipping cost is.  This will include both the cover and gearbox...no...not selling separately and charging the outrageous price I see on fleebay.  "Version A" will be coming end of this month.  Lane...hope this helps.

For those missing the gears...I will make a silly attempt to get them casted in bronze...hard stuff. Hope it works.

Hey Louis, I too am in need of a Type B gear box (single hole in bottom / thinner shaft diameter). Looks like I only need the bottom. Will you sell a bottom by itself, or do the gear boxes only come as a set? Could you post a picture of the pointer when you have time? Thanks.

I will be selling both bottom and top as a set (ensure the top and bottom sit properly). Pointers for the nonwings are ready. You can get them from George Durbin.

Thanks for the quick response Louis! Here's my dilemma...I bought a brass kidney bottom about a year ago, but haven't started the restoration yet. After seeing this thread, I realized I didn't know there were Type A (2 holes) and Type B (1 hole) versions of the gear box. So, I checked what I bought versus what was on my fan, and of course, they are different.    My fan has the 1-hole Type B gearbox, but my new brass gearbox has 2 holes. If I was able to lay my hands on some Type B gears and shaft, would I be able to switch out the gears and use the 2-hole brass bottom I already bought? Or, is there more inconsistencies between the 2 versions?

No...The switch gear shaft is not interchangeable.  I have seen people modify the shaft switch hole with some other metal fittings....up to you.  I prefer one piece.  Now if you had version B and want to enlarge it...I say go for it.  Otherwise...long story...No.

Louis, looks like I asked my question the wrong way .... I meant to ask : If I were to locate some Type A (2-hole) gears/shaft (larger shaft), and fit them in the aftermarket brass Type A (2-hole) gearbox bottom I already have, would that work, or is there something else about a Type B fan that wouldn't work with the Type A gears/shaft sitting in a Type A gearbox?

It should work.  But I hear the gears are harder to locate and not everyone is willing to let them go.  They are waiting to locate intact boxes to insert them into.

There was an effort made prior by a non member.  Very cost prohibitive to say the least.  Please PM if successful and I will look to see which one I need.  Thank you for your efforts!
