This project started out when I had a little list in my mind before I headed to the Museum Meet this year. It was my first meet and I'm so grateful for everyone's hard work in putting it together. I had such a great time meeting new people and finally putting a face to the names. The list of what I wanted was: 1) Something with 6 blades 2) Something brass 3) Something different in appearance Well, it came out of a box and onto a table, and I knew I had to have it. It ran beautifully, minus the fact that I had to give it a nudge-start. Ok, it needed more than just some cosmetic love. I can do that! But to what extent was I going to take this project? I brought it home and I knew I had to make this one a beauty again. But it would be a sin to take those brass blades and bury them again in a coating and hiding the potential that they hold. This one is gonna get a little bling as well.  It just looked sad with all of that missing paint on the base. It's time to tear it down and start the journey... Doing some research, it seemed that powder coating was the route I wanted to go. Prismatic Powders' Sandal Grey was used by other members and I loved seeing their results in the finish. Right about the same time I acquired the fan, our group got a new member, and he happened to live right by me. Los Alvarado was looking for some Westy parts for a build he was doing with his daughter. I happened to have those parts lying around. He came up and I got him the parts he needed and we got to talking. He does powder coat as well! This fan just found the perfect person to lay down a beautiful powder coat. After pulling the stator out to find the source of the start issue, I was doing my checks with the multimeter when something shiny caught my eye... bare copper! Well, that shouldn't be there! Looking at it, it was clearly a break in the wire. Looking around the shiny copper, it looked like someone used an incorrect hole to thread a bolt in to hold the rotor in order to remove the blade. There were thread marks leading right to the broken wire. After some poking around, I was able to get a little bit of the wire exposed and make a fix.  A check with my multimeter across the leads now showed very good results. Reassembled the motor, applied power, and now the blades started up without assistance. Whew, no rewind needed here. Back apart it came and a heavy coat of varnish, the stator rested to the side waiting for the rest of the fan to be completed. After blowing everything apart, I knew the only right way to polish those blades and get the spider coated was to do a de-wing. I've never riveted blades before, but another search and reading session here on the forum gave me confidence and a parts list. Out came the drill and off came the blades. This Emerson was now ready for Los to work his powder magic. He blasted everything down smoothed out casting lines, prepped, primed, and coated the parts (screws included!). Oh, both of the badges were going to be coated as well to match. He artfully coated and polished the badges as well.       While Los completed the finishing touches on the coating, I got to work on bringing a shine to the brass. For the record, I love Emerson. My buffing wheel is powered by an Emerson fractional HP motor. My fans ain't modern, why should my motors be modern? HAHA! Fired up the Emmy buffer and got to work...    Not too shabby in my book after some Simichrome got rubbed on. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that 2 of the 3 grommets crumbled apart upon tear down. Lets add to the bling a little... brass grommets it is! After getting all my rivets, tools, brass grommets in, it was time for reassembly. Los brought me the powder coated parts and I felt like a kid on Christmas opening that box. Grin ear to ear. Some of Tony Clayton's beautiful wire was sourced and let us begin the build!  The collar was made by Jerry Bravi and was treated to powder coating as well. The old pot metal collar was showing stress cracks anyways.       And, of course, Bella Cat could not leave me alone and had to test the breeze power...          Centered right underneath my Emerson sign; the perfect spot for my latest restoration. Quiet, smooth, and a little bling. Thanks again to Los Alvarado for the powder coating perfection, Jerry Bravi for the perfect replacement collars, Tony Clayton for the beautiful wire, and to everyone who contributes to the forum so it becomes a great resource to aid in restorations like this! OOOH, I love it. Thanks for the story board pictures too. What a first class restoration. It must give you great pleasure to see it all done and restored to its former glory (if not better than it was originally). Nice AFCA team effort! A job well done!

I appreciate the comments! Tony you helped on this resto. Give yourself some credit as well. Your wire is so nice to work with and just adds to the fan. When my brother came over and checked it out, your wire was actually the first thing he commented on. He said it just looked right for the fan. He's got an eye for scrutinizing little detail bits. William, not sure if they made a Northwind in French Grey, but I'm sure it would look real nice in that color. I have a feeling Mr Russ Huber is already digging through the archives looking for various Northwind color options.

Thanks Sean and Noah. Don't get me wrong, black and brass is a good combo, but I had to break up the collection a little bit more by adding in this fan (I couldn't let my Vornados be the only colorful fans!)

It was a pleasure to work on this fan. It came together beautifully. That Emerson looks so sharp. Thanks Patrick for letting me lay down some powder and the kind words. It was so worth it. Loved the challenge. It truly looks like a piece of art worthy of museum status sitting along with your other treasures.

I had some French Grey mixed up at my local paint shop. I sprayed my table oscillator with it. I'm having a hard time pinning down the color. Indoors it kind of looks almost beige. In the natural light of the garage it looks just about right, but outdoors in the sun the color fades away almost completely and looks basically white or just a shade off. I should say that I've never actually seen first hand what French Grey looks like. I'm going by Ral color chips on my screen and what you've done here. I'll be doing a fan with this color soon. This color really does look different in all sorts of light. From off white to beige to grey to all points in between. You can request a color sample of the Sandal Grey from Prismatic Powders and you can get a match off of the sample.

When I got the paint from the shop, the label called it "Driftwood Grey". There is a Ral color #7035 called French Grey, but my shop would only mix it in the high end paint costing nearly three times as much so I picked the color from the color chips he showed me. I think I came pretty close....Also I trust my paint match guy. He's got a better eye than I do. Cheers, Bill

I love working on these Emersons. They are so well designed and robust. Aside from the oscillator collar, there's so little to go wrong on these.

My fascination with the 1914-1916 216XX series was, because it was the first model to feature the incomparable gearbox and collar setup. Outfitted with Jerry Bravi's collars, they're invincible.  Even put a Bravi collar on my bedside 27666, which is similar to your 71666, minus the epic powder coat in white! Can't wait to finish the dang customer restos(2 left) and start on my antique white 19646. Gotta get a Bravi blade for it as well.

Thank you for everyone who enjoyed the article I wrote for the recent issue of our magazine. Loved hearing the comments! First write-up I've done since my college days! I've had a few people ask about the grommets that I used on this fan. I created them using a couple parts I sourced from Grand Brass Lamp Parts. I used P/N BG450 (1/8ips Male Knurled Cord Bushing) and P/N RE1/8FX3/8MS (1/8F x 3/8M Reducer with Shoulder). This worked out nicely for me. It screwed into the original grommet holes with no problems.

No problem David! Bella is has been part of just about every fan I've worked on. Typically not in a helpful way. She loves to walk across my work bench or curl up in my lap as I'm working. I have to plan out having everything in reach at that point! The only part she leaves me alone on is when I'm buffing. She hates that sound!

Thanks Tony. Glad I also restore lights. Just did a test fit for the grommet hole size, then went shopping through the Grand Brass site. Ordered a couple other parts, but this combo turned out to be the best.
