Is the North Wind a good fan for everyday use? It is in NOS condition according to the seller, whom I trust. It has been checked out for safety . I have an Emerson from the late 1930s and it is fantastic ! I also have a one speed from 1949. I really like Emersons but they are all I have had experience with .

Northwinds are AC/DC Universal Fans which means they have brushes in them, they can be used for everyday use but you have to make sure the brushes are in good shape and aren't terribly worn, otherwise the fan won't run right.

Thank you for the reply . Are these desirable fans? It’s from the late 1930s, I believe. The finish is pristine and original .

I believe they are about in the middle desirability wise. and yes thery are 1930s vintage.

I sold one MINT IN BOX (TYPE 444A) for 200 - - they are OK, gold paint on the blades, ON OFF, later models had multiple speeds - Bushes & caps must be intact.  Attached Image (viewed 147 times):

There were 3 numbers used after J, These were 10-11-12... 1930-31-32... There was also some 32v dc only models made and are pretty scarce... Geo...

Now I’m having to decide on: north wind 444 with original box. Some fading of blade paint from top of blade about an inch or so down. Honestly finish looks really great ; OR 16 inch Art Deco Robbins and Meyers 1937 Amazing original condition ; OR 1927 Emerson North Wind model 450 , 1927 and owner says ac or dc. ( which I don’t understand how it could be both . All about same price range . All beautiful . It will be used regularly. It’s a gift for my son. Is one better than the other ? All wiring is either replaced or examined to be original but in perfect condition and all grease replaced and motors checked out . Guaranteed . Thank you for any help . all of the fans listed are universal motors(except the R&M) - - can be run on AC or DC. The 16" R&M will certainly move more air!! AC/DC motors have brushes that require some care & wear down over time. As a gift a later "modern" fan might be the ticket. I have around 20 R&M Deco "Zeppelin"(10",12",16") fans & they are super smooth & finding one with perfect/great paint is difficult.
