That halo coil can be easily replaced with a capacitor. I don’t think anyone rewinds those since it’s nichrome wire. The value of the cap is in the schematic drawings on this forum. The drawing I think is by McComas. The halo does the phase shift for the start coil in the stator. Cap does the same. And yes, if the actual choke is bad, see Rick

Do you know the uf / voltage of the ideal capacitor for those GE BMY's ?

Would a GE BMY 3 speed switch work or is this switch specific for this fan?

Looks promising. Is there anyone who can do this If I send the switch? I don't think I am up to it yet skill wise.

Can’t speak for the R&M, but I have 2 GE BMYs converted as the original poster has, and they work perfectly. Thanks to Jim for finding the diagram. Connection is easy, the halo coil has 2 wires, the cap has 2 wires. Simply swap the devices. Polarity doesn’t matter. It’s AC. Last edited on Thu Jan 14th, 2021 02:26 am by Lane Shirey |

On the Diagram it shows the capacitor on one of the 2 wires coming from the motor. Does it matter which of the 2 wires gets the capacitor and what happens if it does matter and I have it backwards? 2nd question: do I remove the old nichrome ring around the original switch? and if so where do the wires go that are connected to it? Are those then connected to the 2nd wire of the power cable? any help would be appreciated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
