And another thing the crack wizard Spurling repaired was 3 cracked spokes on the rear cover... These were spot welded... Attached Image (viewed 466 times):

Wow that turned out beautiful. As for how the outer housing got cracked; is the stator a press fit (or at least a no-clearance fit) into the housing? If so, it could be that over the years, rust built up between the stator and housing, and caused hoop stress on the housing until it broke. Not having seen your fan in person before it was taken apart I am not trying to say this is how it happened in your case, just tossing out info.

I will put this in the upcoming issue of the Fan Collector magazine... video: That is surely a thing of beauty. The balance is certainly smooth, in the video. You said it in the video, that the bearings are perfect and perfectly oiled. Also the rotor design with all the mass in a ring at the outer edge, will have the maximum moment of inertia for a given rotor weight, so yeah - that slow wind-up and coast-down! As for the whine, it has earned the right to whine a little... afterall it has endured ownership by humans for about 124 years.... that's enough to make anyone ready to whine!

Hi David, This is what I found for what it is worth. The housing was slightly thinner in that area but I believe the cause was that the front face plate was not concentric. I had to clean up the male lip that slides into the housing to eliminate the interference in that area. I wire stitched and spot welded the crack. The spokes that were cracked were noticeably thinner as well. The spot welding was tricky due to the thin casting in those areas. The stator is not pressed in. There is ample clearance between it and the motor housing. I think they had some casting issues 124 years ago. Nice to make your acquaintance, Jim

I went to a farm auction 4 years ago and there was this Tesla and the most perfect 16" tank i ever saw on a table! These 2 fans were the very last things to sell... Only 4 of us was left... I knew the guy bidding against me was a flipper so I wasn't worried about him... The strange thing is the Tesla was not in the pictures of the sale! Cha-ching!! To make a long story short I gave $45 for the Tesla and $40 for the 16" tank! It was a very good day! Geo... Last edited on Wed Feb 10th, 2021 11:00 pm by George Durbin |
