Three 21646 variants in timeline order.  Earlier 1914-15(16?) long motor tag..... 1916(?) box motor tag.....box motor tag with 1917 introduction carry handle.  Any other variants known?

No steel guard 21646 models? 1917 was the big time transitional year for Emerson brass to steel guards, and introduction of the 12" and 16" carry handles.

When did that box shape motor tag with no motor handle get implemented??  Either 16, or very early 17??

Emerson manufacture data supports the 216xx oscillating models off the market for the 17 season. I think I have that right?  :wondering: :D

This is what I have found Russ.   If you see something incorrect please let me know.
From my Earlyfans.com blog:

19644 (1914-15 or 16), 19645 (1916-19), 19646 (1914-18), 19648 (1914-18), 19666 (1914-17- not 1918)  Swivel & Trunnion.  Steel cages in 1918.  Change from cast hub to stamped hub blade during production.  Carrying handle added to 12 and 16" for 1917, both stationary and oscillating models (Electrical World)

21645 ((1915-16),  21646 (1914-16),  21648 (1914-16),  21666 (1914-16)  Oscillator with new, third type of gearbox, last to use the step base.  Still cast hub blades.

24645 (1917-19),  24646 (1917-18),  24648 (1917-19),  24666 (1917-18),  24668 (1917-18)  Oscillator, new cone shaped base (except for 24645 which used step base with thicker bottom flange), steel cages for 1918.   Change from cast hub to stamped hub blade during production.   Carrying handle added to 12 and 16" for 1917, both stationary and oscillating models (Electrical World)

Steel cages for 1918.

Strong evidence through imaging and hints in Emerson articles in 17 electrical trade the brass guard was transitional to steel in 17. All images are from 17 electrical trade. There is nothing in 18 electrical trade documentation to support the steel guard implemented for that season.

I have a 21648 motor with box tag and carry handle.  Not a peep about the carry handle in 16 electrical trade.  Did Emerson carry the 216xx model manufacture into dirt early 17 fan motor season??  Did Emerson market the 216xx in 16 with box motor tag and no carry handle??

286033.  Your example lost its original ratchet case and was replaced with the more hardy later adjustment case.
