I don't know if the 12" Lively-Aire would apply here or not, but I have a 12" 2 Speed Lively-Aire from ca. 1950 that had a ceramic coated nichrome resistor in the base of the fan for low speed and that resistor unfortunately failed and I just replaced it with a NOS 47 Ohm 10W cement power resistor that had spade connectors on each connector end I just took the spade connectors off the end of some old burned out fog lamps and wired that resistor into the base of the fan and its been working fine since.
