Opened the oil cup this weekend. Was that once oil? Now, it appears to be very old, and very bad smelling grease. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone.

By that do you mean you removed the blade and looked at the bearing? The 77 series fans (along with many earlier iterations) never really had oil cups, they had an oil port that led to the oil reserve and bearing. Those fans had an Archimeadean style screw type oil conveyor on the rotor. The oil inside there could sludge up, depending on the type used. I have always found rather rank grease in the oscillating gearbox under the bullet cover though, it gets to be like tar.

Yep, that's where the gunk is, Duane. In the gearbox. I cleaned out some of the really HARD stuff. Is that the recommended procedure? Thanks for the help everyone.

I usually take note of how the gearbox comes apart (noting fiber washers, those little red things) then give it a good clean with Brake Cleaner. After it dries out, give the gears some nice fresh grease on their teeth and on their bearing pinions. I usually use LubriPlate general purpose white lithium grease, it's a nice light duty grease.

I have some of that grease, Duane. I'll clean it further. Thank you.
