I posted a WTB and received a PM that had a blank field as SENDER.  The email alert said CORTESS sent you a PM. The PM read: Kindly contact holmes in texas,he has Switch/Coil for an EMERSON 16648 for sale in good condition. Here’s his email shastaholmes@outlook.com

I don’t see CORTESS or Shasta Holmes in our member index.

No money sent. Ive asked for photos of the item and the AFCA member that is CORTESS

Sumin’ smells fishy

Well, this whole inquiry stunk to high heaven!  The email recipient could not provide the name of the AFCA member that would have sent me the PM.  I asked for pics and he grabbed stock images from a quick Google search.  I did not proceed. Now, I wonder how I received a PM on the forum from a no-name sender??:

I see Hal Holmes joined 2-25-21 and has no posts. Did you also feel suspicious?

Be very cautious dealing with non-members.

I have forwarded this experience and another very similar I experienced myself to our webmaster. While this scammer is sniffed out please do not make contact with anyone reaching out with a nameless member account, "cortess", cortesshasta@aol.com, "cortes in Texas," "Hall Holmes," "holmes," "shasta," or the like. The PM's appear to be attempts to generate fraudulent sales. Kudos on a good catch Allen.

I also got one of these scam PMs that was for a 4-wire 16" Hunter 2 Star Stator that I had posted about in the BST Section seeing if anyone here had one, and then mysteriously one day I got a PM from someone saying that someone in texas had a 4 wire 16" Hunter 2 Star Stator for sale and to contact the person through an email address.
I have a feeling its an advertising bot of some sort.

I took a screenshot of the scam PM and I tried to upload it on here for people to see but the website's severely outdated photo uploading software scaled the screenshot down to the point that the text wasn't readable.

Any time you see the word "kindly" in any sort of e-mail or PM you can be assured it is a scammer.

This is a hard situation to avoid on the Internet. It costs the scammers virtually nothing to send e-mails and make shill accounts on websites such as ours. The chances are, if they send out enough scam messages, eventually someone will fall for it. Because they are spending nothing and occasionally making some money they will continue to find ways to perpetrate the scam.

Thanks to vigilant members for sharing any suspicious messages so that similar questionable messages can be compared and the scammer outed.
