I don't often find myself working on vintage fans, but I got the opportunity when I got a request to restore this vintage Westy.  It was a lot of fun to work on, I must say.  Unfortunately, I'm taking a bath on the price I quoted.  The fan arrived in parts so I wasn't able to see it working.  I did test the stator to make sure that it didn't show a short or open.  The resistance looked reasonable at 39 ohms.  After a complete cleanup, stripping of the old paint, powder coating, rewiring, new switch, felt on the base, polished blade, relubrication, and reassembly, I discovered that after about 10 minutes of running it would just stop.  To my surprise, after sitting for about 20 minutes, it would again work... for another 10 minutes before it would stop again.  To my dismay, the stator appeared to have a heat related issue.  In order to complete the project on time, I was forced to buy a donor fan.  After a successful transplant the patient is running perfectly.  Lesson learned.  If the fan is not running upon deliver, do not provide a quote until after thorough inspection.  Actually, I probably still wouldn't have caught this issue since it didn't present until after 10 minutes of run time.  It's a really cool fan.  Not often does my wife say "we need to get one for ourselves".
